Thor's Cave sunburst, Manifold Valley, Staffordshire, May 2007 |
© Copyright Fran Halsall |
The low-angled afternoon sun dramatically lights a west-facing aperture in the side of Thor's Cave. Spilling a beam of light across an earthen floor where ritual artefacts have been discovered that date back 10,000 years. The cave is 10 metres high at the entrance, is a stunning example of Karst limestone scenery, and is positioned high above the current
course of the River Manifold. Massive limestone columns, sculpted by the water that has
long since drained into the valley, support the spacious interior.
