Spring showers stimulate rapid growth in the long grasses of the hay meadows of the Peak Park. A Hawthorn tree blooms, bright with a mass of white flowers, in a landscape that has been shaped by farming over many hundreds of years. Hay meadows are a species-rich habitat, which are able to support many species of birds, insects and small mammals. Unfortunately they are seriously threatened by modern agricultural practices, including the use of fertilisers and the intensive rearing of grazing animals.
