Dense carpets of Common Heather transform the uplands of the Peak District for a few weeks in late summer. Silver Birch is the typical tree species to be found in this habitat, where it forms islands of bright green foliage surrounded by swathes of purple. Tempestuous weather brings dark clouds threatening heavy showers, and occasional sudden light that heightens the natural drama for the briefest of moments.
