Limestone pavement is a highly unusual environment caused by glacial ice sheets scraping the surface of exposed rock. The erosive action of water on the soluble stone results in deep cracks, known as "grikes", leaving isolated slabs or "clints", leading to it being referred to as a pavement. This is internationally significant geology, with some of the best examples being found in the British Isles.
