Cressbrook Dale is a classic dry limestone river valley. The gorge is steep sided and the
slopes host lime-loving plants in spring. Of these, the flamboyant Early Purple Orchid is
justifiably renowned. Late evening light brings a backlit glow to the translucent magenta
flowers, bringing an intensity of colour that makes them the jewel of calcareous grassland.
