On this open moorland, a single birch tree battles on for existence. Stunted by the poor
nutrients in the soil and subject to the powerful forces of the wind shaping the direction of its growth, this specimen barely reaches a metre in height. Birch will tolerate all but the most extreme conditions, making it a successful coloniser of BritainŐs moorlands where few other trees can become established.
