At the edge of the Peak District National Park, just outside Sheffield's city limits, sits Blacka Plantation nature reserve and SSSI. Pine is the dominant tree species in this woodland, which opens out onto a wet moorland habitat. On this cold day in early spring, freshly fallen snow muffles all sound and freezing fog heightens the pervading sense of eeriness.
