Symphony for the Mountains - update

An ambitious project

This work sets out to express the human experience and spiritual gains from time spent in the world’s greatest mountain ranges, through the use of photographs, paintings and words.

The range of images aims to express the enormous breadth of experiences and vistas witnessed in these wild locations, from the harmonious and healing properties of being above the clouds, to the extreme conditions and emotions of world mountaineering.

Symphony for the Mountains is a three-part exhibition that will take place over a twelve month period, celebrating the world’s most inaccessible mountain landscapes through contributions from some of the UK’s top mountaineers, outdoor photographers, painters and writers.

The three stages of the exhibition were launched on 8th September 2006 with Part One: Odyssey and Expectation which features contributions from 35 of some of the country’s best known and respected mountaineers, climbers, outdoor photographers, painters and writers: Doug Scott, John Beatty, Bill Birkett, Ian Parnell, Adam Long, Pete O’Donovan, John Norris, Rob Collister, Oliver Metherell, Paul Evans, Jim Curran, Tim Glasby, John Houlihan, Dave (Cubby) Cuthbertson, David Simmonite, Andy Cave, Simon Nadin, Tony West, and Andy Perkins and more…

more to come

The second stage, to be launched in Spring 2007, is titled Action, Adrenaline and Living, which will be followed by Epic and Epiphany the same Summer.

The exhibition will culminate in late 2007 with the grand finale, a large screen presentation that incorporates an original soundtrack, and combines all three parts – plus previously unseen works – and which will tour the UK (details to be confirmed).

At the end of the exhibition a special triptych will be signed by all the contributors and auctioned, with the proceeds going to Doug Scott’s charity Community Action Nepal. You can read more about CAN on our website or by going to www.canepal.org.uk.

The exhibition can be viewed both online at www.living-art.org.uk and at our Hathersage-based gallery, Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm.
