WEEE MAN

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: A familiar adage that more and more of us are trying to incorporate into our everyday lives. However, some have taken it beyond the remit of the home and office. Designer and contemporary artist Paul Bonomini has taken on board futurologist Buckminster Fuller's saying that "waste is nothing more than an un-harvested resource" and channelled his creative vision into an extraordinary piece that impacts both visually and mentally.

The WEEE Man, housed at the Eden Project, Cornwall, is a fantastic 7-metre tall robotic figure made up entirely of electrical waste. Old computer mice, washing machines, TVs, mobile phones, vacuum cleaners and more all play their part. The installation represents the alarming 3.3 tonnes of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that the average person in the UK will, currently, consume in a lifetime. Bonomini wanted to create a dramatic, informative and witty piece, and something to raise public awareness and stimulate debate.
