The Living Art of the National Park

Rocks sculpted by wind and water; moors charged with drama; wild birds singing, hares dancing, seasons painting images throughout the year.
Living art beats through every landscape of the Peak District National Park - and humans have added their own artistry, through building, working the land and cultural traditions over thousands of years.

Like any precious heirloom this inheritance needs special care. That is why the Peak District National Park Authority was set up in 1951 - the UK's first national park - to ensure this heritage can be passed on to future generations.

Covering more than 1,400sq km of landscape - mostly in private ownership - the Authority's official role is to:
• conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area
• promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the National Park's special qualities.
It also aims to foster the economic and social wellbeing of 38,000 residents, while welcoming more than 10m visitors a year. In trying to balance the fragile interplay between humans and nature, its tools include:
• co-operation with residents, landowners, farmers and conservationists
• specially-tailored planning policies and careful consideration of planning applications
• support, advice, grants and encouragement to community groups, businesses and farmers
• information, environmental education, volunteering opportunities
• recreational facilities - trails, cycle hire, visitor centres, free guided walks to promote understanding and a full ranger service to help promote access for all.

The Peak District National Park combines a natural gallery, museum, observatory, sculpture park and gym all in one. The Authority joins Living Art in celebrating its unique beauties, and in promoting its standing as a national treasure.
