Castles in the air

Castles in the air

© Copyright Ray Manley

Alport Castles, just off the Snake road, is the site of Britain's biggest landslip, where a whole hillside has collapsed on unstable shales to create a Wild West wilderness of cliffs, towers and fallen boulders. The Tower (centre) is a detached block looking for all the world like a crenellated Norman keep, and it gives the place its name.
