Like several other iconic mountains around the globe, Fitz Roy dominates its surroundings much more than its height alone would suggest. Its profile remains a perfect cone from almost every angle, and held up in the sky by a great icy pedestal studded with lesser spires that gather around its base like disciples. With such a profile and the clouds that incessantly surround the summit it is entirely understandable that the natives’ name was Chalten, meaning volcano. The mountain now takes its name from Captain Robert Fitz Roy, who explored the area in 1834 with a young naturalist called Charles Darwin. The surrounding peaks such as Saint-Exupery and Mermoz were named after pilots who flew the first Patagonian mail in some of the harshest conditions on earth. Poincenot, the spire immediately left of Fitz Roy, was named after a climber who died crossing the river below the mountain in 1952. The leader of his expedition, Lionel Terray, went on to make the first ascent of Fitz Roy with Guido Magnone the same year.
