The harshness of the environment in Patagonia is tough on flora and fauna alike. As Darwin observed in 1834, “The curse of sterility is upon the land.” This refers not so much to the abundance of life as to its variety; those species that have adapted to the climate do well, but they are few. Guanacos (Lama guanicoe) are one such species, a member of the camel family closely related to Llamas and Alpacas. They are widely distributed throughout the Andes but in varying numbers due to pressure from uncontrolled hunting. One region where they are well protected and present in numbers is the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Here the adults have only to fear predation from Pumas, although the young (known as Chulengos) are susceptible to both foxes and the tough climate.
