Gomukh, India, November 2004. This is one of a series of pictures taken during a trek to the glacial source of the Ganges during the Hindu Durga Puja - a festival celebrating the cosmic mother. I reached the camp below the glaciar after an eight hour walk from Gangotri. I joined hundreds of pilgrims, mostly from Bengal, including one man walking barefoot and wearing only a blanket. Being November, night temperatures plummeted 10 below zero. Set at 4000m above sea level, altitude sickness had set in by this time.
