Description

According to tribal legend, God planted the Baobab tree upside down. This drought resistant species stores water in its trunk and boughs. Elephants tusk through the thick bark to feed on the succulent tissues within. These trees are extremely rare and only occur in occasional groups across small parts of Africa. This stand of trees grows on a small island of sand in the remote Makgadikgadi Salt Pans of the Kalahari Desert. These are the Baines Baobabs painted by Baines the reknowned artist and explorer. © John Beatty
